This gripping 1961 film based on the award-winning play about a struggling black family living on Chicago's South Side and the impact of an unexpected insurance bequest is received by the recently widowed matriarch. The $10,000 life insurance check, she soon learns, that each member of her family has their own ideas on how to best spend the money. Each family member sees the bequest as the means of realizing dreams and of escape from grinding frustrations. 128 min.
