Dark Manhattan (1961)Produced by and stars Ralph Cooper -- is an all black cast melodrama, aimed at what were once known as "colored" movies.Directed by Harry Fraser and George Randol. Cast: Ralph Cooper, produced and stars in this all black cast melodrama featuring: Sol Johnson, Bee Freeman, and Cleo Herndon Cooper stars as anti hero Curley Thorpe, the heads of all protection rackets in Harlem. Curley begins to think about reforming when he fall in love with virginal nightclub chanteuse Cleo. Alas, a rival gang begins encroaching upon Thorpe's Territory resulting into a climatic cars racing through Harlem streets. Cooper, an actor and emcee, gained renown as the founder of the Apollo Theater's famous Amateur Night where such luminaries as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and other got their start. Cooper worked as an actor in Hollywood films during the 1930's and as a producer of films for African American audiences, Dark Manhattan a must see film! 77 min. |
